Today a new report, On my own: The accommodation needs of young people leaving care in England, was released by Barnardo’s. 

Commenting on the release of the report, Robert Tapsfield, chief executive of the Fostering Network, said: “We welcome this report, and we believe that all young people leaving care should have the opportunity for continuity and stability. 

“The Fostering Network’s recent Don’t Move Me campaign highlighted leaving care as one of the biggest issues facing fostered young people, and succeeded in changing the law to allow them stay with their foster carers for longer. Those in foster care should not have to face the prospect of adulthood alone, and that is why it is vital that local authorities ensure that they properly implement this new staying put legislation for all those who want it. They must use the responsibility and money provided by Government to support the new law wisely.

“We firmly believe that, as the report recommends, local authorities must support all care leavers to find suitable accommodation, and this must include checking the quality and ongoing suitability of housing as the young person’s needs change, and preparing care leavers who may face financial difficulties when they reach the age of 21.

“An investment in young people now will be an investment that pays dividends for the rest of their lives.”
