Children of foster carers

The decision to become a foster carer should not be taken lightly as it involves the whole family. But fostering can and does have a positive impact on everyone in the household. We recognise the vital role children of foster carers can play in the success of fostering. At The Fostering Network, we help support and celebrate the children of foster carers.

Why are children of foster carers so important?

Becoming a foster carer will have a huge impact on everyone living at home and everyone in the household needs to be committed to fostering.

The whole family will be involved in the decision to foster and the assessment process, and training is available for children of foster carers. Many fostering services have their own support groups and provide children of foster carers with training and advice.

Children of foster carers have to share their parents, their toys and their friends, as well as sometimes cope with difficult and challenging behaviour. Despite these difficulties, many say that being part of a foster family has had a positive impact on them, and helped them to understand others better.

Celebrating children of foster carers.

Every October we run Children of Foster Carers Month, our UK-wide campaign to celebrate the significant contribution of children of foster carers to successful foster care.

Our annual Fostering Excellence Awards also acknowledge the outstanding contribution made children in a fostering family. Below is a film featuring one of the winners of the Outstanding Contribution by Sons and Daughters Award in recent years.
